Our four-year BA Journalism and Film (including foundation year) is ideal if you don't currently meet the entry requirements for the three-year program and need to strengthen both your subject knowledge and academic abilities.
This program begins with a foundation year (Year Zero), followed by three additional years of study. In Year Zero, you'll explore three academic subjects related to your chosen field while completing a mandatory academic skills module, with extra English language support available for non-native speakers.
From day one, you'll join Essex's vibrant global community at the UK's most internationally diverse campus university.
Upon successfully finishing Year Zero through our Essex Pathways Department, you'll advance to complete your degree with the Department of Literature, Film, and Theatre Studies.
Our BA Journalism and Film program provides a versatile, creative education with excellent career prospects. The curriculum equally balances Journalism and Film studies, with numerous modules integrating both disciplines, such as Documentary Filmmaking and Advanced Practical Journalism.
In Journalism, you'll master both theoretical knowledge and practical skills, honing your writing and broadcasting abilities while developing strong editorial judgment. You'll acquire investigative techniques and analytical skills, learning to excel both independently and collaboratively in journalistic production.
The Film component covers cinematic history and theory while offering hands-on training in camera operation, editing, and film production. You can explore directing, screenwriting, and various screen media formats, from traditional cinema to digital platforms. The program also develops transferable skills in research and academic writing, complemented by career guidance. In your final year, you can choose a specialized film journalism option that bridges both disciplines.
