Our combined BA in Film and Journalism at Essex provides a dynamic, adaptable program with excellent career preparation. The curriculum is evenly split between Film and Journalism studies, featuring interdisciplinary modules like 'Documentary Filmmaking' and 'Advanced Practical Journalism' that bridge both fields. In Journalism, you'll master theoretical and practical aspects of the profession, honing your writing, broadcasting, and editorial decision-making abilities while developing investigative techniques and teamwork skills. The Film component covers cinematic history and theory while offering hands-on training in camera operation, editing, and production, with additional opportunities in directing, screenwriting, and digital media studies. You'll also acquire valuable research, academic writing, and career development skills. A third-year specialization in film journalism integrates both disciplines. Weekly schedules typically include one-hour lectures paired with seminars, though formats vary by module.International OpportunitiesWe encourage global learning experiences through study abroad programs at partner institutions. The four-year degree option includes a year or term overseas or an international placement (details below). Studying abroad enhances cultural awareness, academic growth, and demonstrates adaptability to future employers. Full-year participants pay just 15% of standard tuition fees, with no additional costs at host universities.Professional PlacementsThe placement year option provides valuable industry experience, giving graduates a competitive advantage by developing professional networks and workplace skills while maintaining the same curriculum structure as the three-year program.
