Our five-year BA European Studies with German (including foundation year) program is designed to build your subject expertise while enhancing your academic abilities. The foundation year (Year Zero) provides comprehensive preparation in these key areas, setting you up for four subsequent years of undergraduate study at Essex.
Upon successfully completing Year Zero through our Essex Pathways Department, you'll advance to continue your degree with the School of Philosophical, Historical and Interdisciplinary Studies.
Turn on the television or glance through any major newspaper, and you're bound to encounter coverage about Europe. The continent's future represents a geopolitical issue of immense significance for our global landscape. However, many struggle to grasp the intricate nature of contemporary Europe.
You'll explore Europe's economic, legal, and social frameworks alongside its historical roots, while gaining appreciation for its vibrant cultural heritage. European artists, writers, musicians, composers, and filmmakers continue to wield cultural influence that rivals America's global prominence.
In addition to European studies coursework, you'll achieve fluency in German. Your fourth year includes immersion in a German-speaking country, allowing deep engagement with both German and broader European cultures. Language shapes our thinking, relationships, and societies - serving as the medium through which we share knowledge, from casual invitations to groundbreaking scientific concepts to international diplomacy.
