Our BA Economics (including foundation year) welcomes both Home and EU students. This program is ideal if you don't currently meet the entry criteria for the standard three-year course and seek to enhance both your subject expertise and academic English abilities.
Spanning four years, this course begins with a foundational Year Zero, followed by three years of specialized study. Your initial year includes four discipline-specific subjects alongside mandatory English language and academic skills training.
From enrollment, you'll join Essex's vibrant global community, studying at the UK's most internationally diverse campus university.
Upon successfully completing Year Zero through our Essex Pathways Department, you'll advance to the Department of Economics. The curriculum provides comprehensive training in economic principles, covering microeconomics, macroeconomics, and both qualitative and quantitative research methodologies. With significant flexibility built into our BA Economics program, you can tailor your studies to focus on areas that particularly interest you.

Qualification Requirements
All applications for degree courses with a foundation year (Year Zero) will be considered individually, whether you
think you might not have the grades to enter the first year of a degree course;
have non-traditional qualifications or experience (e.g. you haven’t studied A-levels or a BTEC);
are returning to university after some time away from education; or
are looking for more support during the transition into university study.
Standard offer:
Our standard offer is 72 UCAS tariff points from at least two full A-levels, or equivalent.

For this course all applicants must also hold GCSE Maths at grade C/4 or above (or equivalent). We may be able to consider a pass in Level 2 Functional Skills Maths where you cannot meet the requirements for Maths at GCSE level. However, you are advised to try to retake GCSE Mathematics if possible as this will better prepare you for university study and future employment.
