Creative Writing allows you to delve into the impulse to craft and shape new realities, exchanging narratives and language with fellow writers. Our program focuses on honing writing skills through diverse genres, spanning fiction, poetry, nonfiction, psychogeography, performance writing, and more. At Essex, we take a distinctive approach to writing instruction, blending conventional and inventive techniques to refine your creative abilities while broadening your understanding of various literary forms. Within our Centre for Creative Writing, we foster an environment of experimentation and artistic expression, helping you become part of a vibrant writing community. You'll also develop valuable skills in research, academic writing, and career planning, with dedicated guidance to support your professional growth.

Our alumni excel in fields such as media, education, publishing, film, and theater. Notably, many have found success in publishing and theatrical production—one graduate now leads editorial operations at a major publishing firm, while another oversees a prominent national theater.

Qualification Requirements

A-levels: BBB - BBC or 120 – 112 UCAS tariff points from a minimum of 2 full A-levels including one essay based subject BTEC: DDM – DMM or 120 – 112 UCAS tariff points from a minimum of the equivalent of 2 full A-levels. Other qualifications that hold UCAS tariff points, and combined qualifications: 120 – 112 UCAS tariff points from a minimum of 2 full A levels or equivalent. IB: 30 - 29 points or three Higher Level certificates with 555-554. We are also happy to consider a combination of separate IB Diploma Programme courses (formerly certificates) at both Higher and Standard Level. Exact offer levels will vary depending on the range of subjects being taken at higher and standard level, and the course applied for. IELTS- 6.0 overall with a minimum of 5.5 in each component TOEFL IBT- 76 overall, with a minimum of 18 in reading, 17 in listening, 20 in speaking and 17 in writing
