Can artists drive social movements? Can exhibitions ignite societal transformation? Who shapes the narratives presented in our museums and galleries? How should cultural institutions address difficult political histories? Do corporate and governmental interests influence national cultural identity? How do curators consider these issues when designing exhibitions? This program equips you with the skills to forge meaningful connections between visual culture, political dynamics, and broader social influences. The BA in Curating with Politics provides interdisciplinary training in art history, curation practices, heritage studies, and political science. You'll gain both theoretical knowledge and practical experience through coursework and museum collaborations. The curriculum explores exhibition design history and theory, focusing on how curatorial decisions impact visitor experiences with artworks and museum collections. Key study areas include: - Art and Power Dynamics - Museum History - Political Science Fundamentals - Latin American Art - Digital Heritage and Museums No prior art or art history qualifications are required. We value students who approach visual culture with fresh perspectives and diverse viewpoints. Essex stands out for its academic excellence, ranking 3rd in the UK for art history research (REF2021). Unlike many programs, you'll learn directly from expert faculty from your first year. International Study Opportunities: Expand your horizons through our study abroad program. The four-year degree option includes a year abroad at partner institutions while maintaining the same curriculum as the three-year program. This experience enhances cultural understanding, academic growth, and demonstrates adaptability to future employers. Full-year abroad students pay only 15% of standard Essex tuition fees, with no additional costs at the host university. Placement Year Option: Upon enrollment, you may choose to incorporate a professional placement year. While you'll secure your own placement, you'll receive departmental and career service support. Placement years require only 20% of regular tuition fees.
