Our program examines criminal activity, justice systems, and punitive measures within broader social frameworks. The course delivers comprehensive criminology training, investigating offenses, offenders, and justice administration through social and psychological lenses. Social psychology methods prove vital for analyzing interpersonal relations in law enforcement agencies and examining what drives criminal conduct. Our BA Criminology program is offered by the Department of Sociology and Criminology, ranked 2nd in the UK for sociology research strength (Times Higher Education research power metric, Research Excellence Framework 2021). International study opportunities Your learning journey isn't confined to campus. We facilitate educational expansion through study abroad options at partner institutions. The four-year degree variant enables a third year overseas or an international placement, while maintaining identical structure to the three-year program. Overseas study exposes you to diverse cultures and languages, enhances your academic and social development, and showcases to employers your adaptability, organizational skills, and maturity. Full-year abroad students pay just 15% of standard Essex tuition fees, with no charges at the host university. Work placement option Alternatively, complete a professional placement year to acquire relevant industry experience, boosting your employability and establishing valuable career connections. While you'll secure your own placement, you'll receive assistance from both your department and our Employability and Careers Center.
A-levels: BBB - BBC or 120 - 112 UCAS tariff points from a minimum of 2 full A-levels.
BTEC: DDM - DMM or 120 - 112 UCAS tariff points from a minimum of the equivalent of 2 full A-levels.
Combined qualifications on the UCAS tariff: 120 - 112 UCAS tariff points from a minimum of 2 full A levels or equivalent.
IB: 30 - 29 points or three Higher Level certificates with 555-554.
IB Career-related Programme: We consider combinations of IB Diploma Programme courses with BTECs or other qualifications.
QAA-approved Access to HE Diploma: 6 level 3 credits at Distinction and 39 level 3 credits at Merit, depending on subject studied - advice on acceptability can be provided
T-levels: We consider T-levels on a case-by-case basis, depending on subject studied. The offer for most courses is Distinction overall. Depending on the course applied for there may be additional requirements, which may include a specific grade in the Core.
