Our BA Childhood Studies (including Foundation Year) is ideal if your current qualifications don't meet the entry requirements for our three-year social sciences programs, offering a pathway to enhance your academic skills. Available to UK and EU students, this four-year program begins with a Foundation Year (Year Zero) through our Essex Pathways Department, followed by three years in the Department of Psychosocial and Psychoanalytic Studies. During Year Zero, you'll explore subjects like Analyzing the Social and Political World and People and Society through our Social Sciences Pathway. Successful completion allows progression to various courses, including BA Childhood Studies, BA Psychosocial and Psychoanalytic Studies, or BA Sociology. This interdisciplinary degree examines the social and emotional development of children from infancy to young adulthood (up to age 25). It's perfect for those passionate about understanding children's lives and pursuing careers in education, health, or well-being. Are you curious about child behavior? What influences their growth, shapes their identity, or determines resilience? Do you aspire to support children facing emotional, social, or educational challenges? If so, this program is tailored for you. Modern children navigate complex experiences—digital media exposure, cultural diversity, cyberbullying, and larger classrooms. Their early years profoundly impact their future, and you can play a pivotal role in shaping positive outcomes. Childhood studies integrates psychology, sociology, and psychoanalysis, preparing you for careers in education, healthcare, or child services. It also provides a foundation for advanced studies in social work, teaching, or speech therapy. You'll explore child development, societal perceptions of childhood, and practical applications through placements. First-year placements involve children of any age, while second-year focuses on infant observation. Assessments are primarily coursework-based. Key topics include: - Psychosocial perspectives - Developmental psychology - Attachment theories - ADHD, trauma, and autism - Criminological viewpoints - Play therapy and infant observation - Historical and literary depictions of childhood - Group therapeutic practices - Well-being and resilience - Educational psychodynamics Our Department of Psychosocial and Psychoanalytic Studies is globally renowned for its work on unconscious influences in mental health and societal dynamics.
