Our BA Criminology (including Foundation Year) may be ideal if you don't currently meet the entry requirements for our three-year social sciences programs and seek a course that enhances your academic abilities. Available to both UK and EU students, this four-year program begins with a Foundation Year (Year Zero) through our Essex Pathways Department, followed by three years in the Department of Sociology and Criminology. Year Zero focuses on our Social Sciences Pathway, covering subjects like Analyzing the Social and Political World and People and Society. Successful completion allows progression to various degrees, including BA Criminology, BA Politics, or BA Sociology. Starting in Year One of BA Criminology, you'll examine crime, justice, and punishment within broader societal frameworks. The flexible curriculum includes diverse topics such as the influence of video games on crime, terrorism, migration, policing, and social control. Our welcoming department boasts extensive research expertise, with specialists in areas like: - Organized crime, surveillance, and counter-terrorism - Environmental harm - Visual criminology - Social history and crime You'll also gain practical skills in criminological research methods—survey design, interviews, and data analysis—to tackle complex questions. The Department of Sociology and Criminology, ranked 2nd in the UK for research power in sociology (Times Higher Education, REF 2021), delivers this program.

Qualification Requirements

All applications for degree courses with a foundation year (Year Zero) will be considered individually, whether you:

think you might not have the grades to enter the first year of a degree course;

have non-traditional qualifications or experience (e.g. you haven’t studied A-levels or a BTEC);

are returning to university after some time away from education; or

are looking for more support during the transition into university study.

Standard offer: Our standard offer is 72 UCAS tariff points from at least two full A-levels, or equivalent.

Mature applicants and non-traditional academic backgrounds:

We welcome applications from mature students (over 21) and students with non-traditional academic backgrounds (might not have gone on from school to take level 3 qualifications). We will consider your educational and employment history, along with your personal statement and reference, to gain a rounded view of your suitability for the course.
