The MSc Cultural Heritage Futures program prepares students to transform the heritage field. This interdisciplinary, solution-oriented curriculum cultivates innovative heritage specialists who leverage data for meaningful social impact. The program approaches heritage as dynamic interactions with both physical and intangible remnants of history, where cultural significance is actively constructed. Participants will master advanced theories, digital competencies, forward-thinking methodologies, and policy frameworks to research, safeguard, and reinterpret heritage in response to urgent global challenges. Graduates will tackle critical questions like: What role can data activism play in decolonizing museums and heritage locations? How might maritime heritage support sustainable community development? How should heritage conservation balance human interests with ecological concerns? Can shared heritage management foster reconciliation in conflict zones? Instruction emphasizes decolonial perspectives and global viewpoints, incorporating case studies from diverse regions worldwide. The teaching faculty combines University of Edinburgh scholars with practitioners from prominent institutions like UNESCO, ICCROM, and national heritage bodies. Students will engage directly with industry leaders and utilize the Edinburgh Futures Institute's collaborative workspaces for co-creative digital projects. Program Outcomes Upon completing this degree, you will be able to: Conceptualize heritage as evolving engagements with historical artifacts and traditions that acquire cultural significance. Investigate how heritage practices can address modern social and ecological issues through data-driven approaches. Develop theoretically grounded, evidence-based innovations with societal value. Communicate persuasively to drive sustainable, equitable change in heritage institutions. Collaborate effectively to address complex heritage challenges with ethical consideration.
