This program examines the interplay between conflict, security, and development through an interdisciplinary social science lens, drawing on global case studies with special emphasis on Africa. Worldwide conflicts inflict profound human suffering, and there's growing policy awareness of their connection to development issues. How can we comprehensively analyze these relationships? And how might deeper insights help shield more individuals from conflict's devastating consequences? The MSc in Conflict, Security and Development adopts a worldwide perspective while maintaining a strong African focus, leveraging the distinctive interdisciplinary strengths of the University of Edinburgh's Centre of African Studies (CAS), which oversees the program. Key program components include: - Examining the theoretical and practical connections between conflict, security, and development - Critically assessing the assumption that security enables development and vice versa Emphasizing cross-disciplinary and cross-cultural education, the program provides hands-on learning opportunities in relevant fields, including an optional policy-oriented dissertation. Through partnerships with policymakers and professionals, students can acquire practical competencies and valuable experience to pursue careers in security and development sectors.
