This combined degree program allows you to explore the languages and cultures of two significant neighboring regions in contemporary Europe.
Russian is spoken by approximately 150 million people worldwide, while the Nordic languages of Denmark, Norway, and Sweden have exerted substantial influence beyond their regional borders.
No prior language experience is required. Through immersive language instruction, including study abroad opportunities, you'll develop advanced proficiency in both Russian and a Scandinavian language of your choice - Danish, Norwegian, or Swedish.
Beyond language courses, you'll examine various aspects of Russian and Scandinavian cultures through studies of literature, history, politics, and linguistics within thematic and comparative frameworks.
Our institution proudly hosts the Northern Scholars initiative, which strengthens academic ties between Nordic, Baltic nations, and Scotland.
We stand as Scotland's sole university, and one of only two in the UK, offering undergraduate joint honors programs in Scandinavian Studies. Unique to our program is the mandatory full academic year abroad incorporated into the four-year honors curriculum, whether spent studying or gaining work experience.
The four-year structure provides flexibility to select courses aligned with your academic interests, professional goals, and career aspirations. You'll graduate with specialized linguistic abilities and intercultural skills highly sought after in diverse global professions.
