For over two and a half millennia, philosophy has formed the foundation of Western thought. It plays a vital role in how we comprehend existence and our relationship with the world around us.
The discipline equips us with methods to rigorously analyze the underlying assumptions across all fields of study and human endeavor.
First Year - Students explore Foundations: From Plato to Enlightenment, Ethics and Values, and Introductory Logic. These modules cover essential philosophical concepts, moral frameworks, and argument analysis. Literature Fundamentals introduces stylistic elements and literary evolution. An optional Philosophy of Science module examines scientific paradigms and their philosophical implications. Second Year - Core philosophy courses include Consciousness, Physical Reality and Communication alongside Epistemology and Ontology, complemented by Scottish Literary Studies. Various elective subjects are available. Third Year - Specialization begins with philosophical subfields or Scottish literature options including critical theory, poetic forms, narrative studies, and dramatic interpretation. Fourth Year - Advanced selections from major subject areas culminate in either an independent research project (a substantial philosophical or literary thesis) or a dual-essay coursework dissertation.
