This program enables you to explore specialized historical studies while integrating the unique perspectives and methods of archaeology. Edinburgh boasts a distinguished heritage in both history and archaeology, along with exceptional collections of printed materials and artifacts to facilitate in-depth research in these fields. History courses span from the early medieval period to contemporary times, covering regions such as Britain, Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas. They employ diverse approaches including political, cultural, social, economic, intellectual, gender, and global/transnational history. Archaeology examines past human societies through material evidence like artifacts and excavation sites, shedding light on early civilizations' economic, social, and cultural aspects. At Edinburgh, we maintain a vibrant tradition of archaeological teaching and research, with expertise in European prehistory, ancient Mediterranean cultures, and Near Eastern/Egyptian civilizations. You'll learn both conventional and cutting-edge archaeological methods, along with theoretical frameworks, including scientific archaeology, osteology, and digital applications. Practical training is central to our approach, offering hands-on experience with artifact analysis using specimens from our Vere Gordon Childe collection. Students undertake a three-week archaeological fieldwork placement after Year 1, with opportunities for additional fieldwork, heritage management projects, public engagement initiatives, and laboratory-based analysis in subsequent years.
