Throughout our four-year program, which includes a year abroad, you'll develop professional competencies in all areas of German language studies, such as:

reading comprehension and auditory skills
composition and translation
oral communication and public speaking
Beyond language acquisition, you'll delve into German literature, cinema, and theatrical works, examining them within their historical and political contexts from the 18th century to modern day.

New students begin with our German 1A course, while those with prior language experience typically enroll in German 1B.

By graduation, you'll have refined your linguistic, critical, and analytical abilities to the level required for completing a dissertation or extended research paper.
Linguistics explores language mechanics, analyzing how sounds, words, sentences, and discourse interact to convey meaning.

Your studies will also cover:

everyday language usage
societal language patterns and historical evolution
child language acquisition
As you advance, you'll have opportunities to formulate and investigate linguistic hypotheses using specialized phonetics and linguistics equipment.
Pairing language study with linguistics highlights your communication skills and cultural adaptability - qualities employers recognize as Intercultural Competence.

This dual-degree program enhances both linguistic capabilities and cross-cultural understanding.
