This program culminates in Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) certification for teaching students aged 11-16, enabling you to teach in secondary schools across England and Wales. When opportunities arise, we also provide experience working with the 11-18 age group. Quality education relies on exceptional subject instruction. Students require skilled mathematics specialists who can motivate and push them. The demand for competent math teachers remains consistently high. Notably, mathematics received more teacher training allocations in 2014/15 than any other subject (NCTL 2015 data). This makes math trainees potentially eligible for top-tier tax-free bursaries or distinguished scholarships from the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications.
Our program helps cultivate outstanding math educators capable of making the subject vibrant through innovative, engaging lesson plans that captivate all learners. The subject studies component demonstrates techniques for overcoming learning obstacles and supporting students at all levels to enhance their mathematical skills and comprehension within secondary education.
Our mathematics facilities are exceptionally well-resourced, featuring two specialized classrooms equipped with multimedia training tools and materials.
Through the subject studies portion of your training, you'll build essential skills and deepen your understanding of teaching mathematics in secondary schools.
You'll master techniques for designing and delivering lessons that creatively address the subject's difficulties, helping diverse learners achieve optimal outcomes.
The University of East London established its Secondary PGCE program in 2001 through collaboration with local authorities to alleviate teacher shortages in East London's secondary schools. This partnership receives ongoing support from the London Boroughs of Barking & Dagenham, Newham, Tower Hamlets, Hackney, Waltham Forest, and Redbridge.
