This program culminates in Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) certification for teaching students aged 11-16, enabling you to work as a secondary school educator across England and Wales. When feasible, we also provide opportunities to gain experience with the 11-18 age group.
STEM disciplines (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) play a crucial role in the UK's economic prosperity, with STEM education consistently recognized as a key focus area for schools. As a chemistry educator, you'll need innovative approaches to ensure equal learning opportunities while highlighting the subject's relevance to daily life.
Our program helps cultivate exceptional chemistry teachers who can motivate young learners through dynamic, inclusive lesson plans. The subject knowledge component of your training develops your expertise in secondary-level science education, with particular emphasis on chemistry.
Initial university-based training combines weekly general lectures with specialized workshops, thoroughly preparing trainees for school placements. This structure allows you to progressively apply teaching methods in real classrooms while connecting educational theory with practical experience. Dedicated independent study time supports research into teaching methodologies, with all UEL sessions grounded in both foundational and contemporary educational research.
UEL established its Secondary PGCE program in 2001 through collaboration with local authorities to combat teacher shortages in East London's secondary schools.
This partnership receives ongoing contributions from the London boroughs of Barking & Dagenham, Newham, Tower Hamlets, Hackney, Waltham Forest, and Redbridge
