The BA (Hons) Sustainable Fashion and Management program addresses a critical educational need by reimagining design analysis, development, and production processes in fashion education. The UK currently leads Europe in clothing consumption, with per capita purchases exceeding other nations by more than 10kg (Fixing Fashion - 2019 government report). The disposable fashion culture has reached alarming levels, evidenced by charities like Barnado's receiving approximately 100,000 bags of used clothing weekly (R. Clark 2019).
Modern fashion designers must prioritize creating systems and products that leverage existing garments and digital technologies to combat the humanitarian crisis of overconsumption. This degree program emphasizes repurposing existing clothing as raw materials, partnering with industry specialists to develop a curriculum covering garment evaluation, consumer behavior studies, circular systems, production oversight, and 3D design exploration.
Students will examine theoretical frameworks supporting circular fashion production systems and repair/reuse methodologies. The program draws on the knowledge of current fashion faculty and industry professionals to ensure curriculum relevance and industry-aligned skill development. A key focus involves employing 3D modeling and rendering tools to establish rapid prototyping methods that significantly reduce material usage while building essential digital competencies applicable across arts and digital technology fields.
