Psychosocial studies emerged from the need to create a social sciences program that examines personal experiences through an integrated lens, combining psychological and sociological viewpoints. Our social environment molds how people perceive their reality, while our internal worlds shape our cognition, behaviors, and interpersonal connections. These dimensions exist in constant interplay, and examining only one provides an incomplete understanding of human nature. Aspiring community practitioners must grasp both theoretical and ethical aspects of personal factors like motivations, cultural backgrounds, and behaviors, while also analyzing broader societal frameworks that affect lives.
This program tackles pressing real-world challenges spanning mental health, social services, discrimination, therapeutic approaches, socioeconomic status, family dynamics, workplace issues, and life transitions. You'll explore service delivery systems, power dynamics, equity concerns, and community-building approaches while examining fundamental human needs. Learners will cultivate reflective practice skills and professional ethics knowledge, particularly regarding governance standards when working with diverse populations and activists. Our faculty incorporate current research and critical perspectives into dynamic classroom discussions
