Uncover the rich heritage of the Highlands and Islands, delve into Scotland's early political landscape, examine authentic 17th-century manuscripts, and thoughtfully assess Scotland's role in the transatlantic slave trade. The program also investigates the evolving dynamics between Scottish and British national identities from the Act of Union in 1707 to modern times.
We prioritize hands-on historical practice. From your first year, you'll work directly with primary materials, evaluating diverse historical records including documents, oral accounts, cartographic resources, visual media, cinema, artworks, and musical compositions.
After establishing foundational knowledge, you'll focus your studies at advanced levels while exploring Scottish history in conjunction with Irish, American, European, and worldwide developments from early modernity to the present era.
Our curriculum spans wide-ranging subjects, including Scottish literary traditions, where you'll analyze how source materials and media representations shape our understanding of history.
