Climate change and biodiversity decline represent the dual crises of our era. Pursue a woodland ecology and conservation degree to join the effort in addressing these issues, acquiring specialized skills in forest stewardship, biodiversity protection, and woodland preservation.
The Woodland Ecology and Conservation program prepares you to become an innovative graduate - exactly what our planet urgently requires to tackle 21st-century environmental problems. This qualification delivers the ecological understanding essential for contemporary sustainable forestry practices. Graduates gain the ability to oversee trees, woodlands, and forests in ways that safeguard biodiversity while maximizing benefits to society, including timber production and recreational spaces, alongside managing crucial ecosystem services like carbon storage, nutrient cycling, water regulation, flood mitigation, and erosion prevention. Those completing this program become equipped to address today's pressing environmental dilemmas: climate change and species depletion.
As a Woodland Ecology and Conservation student at the University of Cumbria, you'll master sustainable forest management techniques through our National School of Forestry. The curriculum combines theoretical learning with practical experience across diverse environments - from ancient woodlands to commercial plantations - complemented by field trips to various upland and lowland ecosystems. You'll also have the chance to complete a year-long professional placement, enhancing your skills and applying classroom knowledge in practical settings.
You'll study in the perfect environment to understand woodland ecosystems, with our National School of Forestry located at our stunning Ambleside campus, nestled within the Lake District's breathtaking landscape.
Your initial year will focus on building fundamental knowledge and broader perspectives in forestry and conservation principles.
