Mental Health Nursing focuses on delivering compassionate support and treatment to at-risk individuals throughout their lives, tailored to their unique requirements. It blends core nursing principles with modern expertise, communication techniques, and interpersonal abilities to foster meaningful therapeutic connections.
Our program equips you with the necessary professional and academic credentials to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council and pursue a career as a mental health nurse. This qualification opens doors to diverse work environments, from hospital wards and community clinics to specialized facilities like Eating Disorder centers, Memory Clinics, Substance Abuse programs, and Correctional Health Services.
Half your training occurs in clinical placements where you'll collaborate with seasoned practitioners, building competence in assisting patients with various mental health challenges across all age groups. Lancaster-based students may complete rotations with regional healthcare providers including Lancashire Teaching Hospitals, Blackpool Teaching Hospitals, and other local NHS trusts, potentially near their residences.
The academic component examines core nursing concepts with emphasis on mental health specialties, addressing biological, psychological, social, cultural, legal, ethical, and policy dimensions of modern healthcare systems.
Practical experience spans both public and private healthcare organizations. Second-year students can pursue specialized enrichment placements, potentially including international opportunities. Our faculty shares extensive field knowledge to deepen your understanding of psychiatric care. The curriculum cultivates critical thinking through lectures, expert panels, patient perspectives, and hands-on training in simulated hospital settings featuring advanced technologies like virtual reality simulations and interactive learning spaces.
