UCL's MSc in Data Science and Public Policy, jointly delivered by the Departments of Economics and Political Science, prepares future policymakers to tackle society's most pressing issues using data-driven approaches. The exponential growth and accessibility of quantitative data in modern times presents policymakers with significant possibilities as well as substantial hurdles. The sheer volume and intricacy of digital data could revolutionize our approach to comprehending, formulating, executing, and assessing impactful public policies. Yet transforming this abundance of information into actionable knowledge demands expertise in advanced data-science techniques, strong technical capabilities, and thorough comprehension of economic and political systems.
This MSc program offers two specialized tracks: Political Science and Economics. Both pathways provide foundational training in applied data-science methodologies and understanding of economic-political systems through three core modules. The Political Science track focuses more intensely on policy development and execution, whereas the Economics track (detailed in the separate Graduate Prospectus) emphasizes contemporary quantitative economic methods. Distinct admission criteria apply to each track, reflecting their respective academic focuses. Applicants may choose to apply for either the Political Science or Economics pathway of this degree.
