This program leverages UCL's renowned expertise in epidemiology, specifically applied to infectious diseases—a discipline that has gained global prominence during the COVID-19 pandemic. Students will explore infection-focused epidemiology, incorporating cutting-edge technologies (such as omics) and their role in addressing worldwide public health issues. Graduates will be prepared for roles in epidemiological research and policy development, with a particular focus on public health. The curriculum covers fundamental statistical and epidemiological concepts, transmission mechanisms, and disease pathogenesis. Additionally, students will examine infectious diseases across diverse economic contexts, using case studies spanning STIs, HIV, tuberculosis, influenza and other respiratory viruses, as well as emerging, vaccine-preventable, vertically transmitted, and vector-borne illnesses.
This program welcomes applicants from various academic backgrounds, including biology, healthcare, mathematics, social sciences, and related fields. Professionals such as researchers, NGO staff, medical/veterinary practitioners, nurses, and development specialists are also encouraged to apply. The student body comprises both UK and international participants, fostering a rich exchange of perspectives and expertise. While prior statistical training isn't mandatory, applicants should highlight their readiness to engage with quantitative material and any relevant academic or professional experience that would support this aspect of the program.
