The Speech, Hearing, and Phonetic Sciences (SHaPS) program stands at the forefront of global research in speech perception and production. Our alumni pursue careers across academic institutions, corporate sectors, healthcare, and government agencies. We maintain strong collaborations with international researchers, cochlear implant developers, and speech technology firms. The department bridges fundamental research on speech and hearing mechanisms with practical applications in speech technology and hearing rehabilitation, integrating perspectives from Linguistics and Experimental Psychology.
Our research techniques encompass behavioral studies; neuroimaging, neurostimulation and neurophysiological approaches; speech production analysis through acoustic and articulatory measurements; along with computational modeling and machine learning applications.
Our investigations span developmental stages from infancy through childhood, typical adult functioning and aging processes; auditory conditions ranging from normal hearing to impairment and speech-in-noise scenarios; language acquisition in monolingual and bilingual contexts; cross-linguistic and accent variation studies; as well as historical sound system evolution.
