Pursuing a PhD at UCL's Department of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Public Policy (STEaPP) enables students to develop into leading interdisciplinary scholars bridging science and policy. The program encourages exploration of how scientific and technical knowledge influences governance and contributes to solving pressing worldwide issues. Doctoral candidates at STEaPP examine how engineering and scientific insights inform policy decisions and contribute to tackling contemporary global problems.
UCL STEaPP emphasizes collaborative research, uniting academics, policymakers, NGOs, and industry leaders to confront urgent societal issues and develop innovative solutions. PhD projects are integrated within various research teams. The department combines methodological approaches from natural sciences, engineering, social sciences, political science, and policy studies. Our work seeks to clarify and enhance understanding of the social mechanisms that facilitate (or hinder) knowledge transfer and application.
