UCL's Institute of Education (IOE), the Faculty of Education and Society, provides globally renowned doctoral programs in education and allied social sciences. Candidates complete four methodological training modules in social sciences while conducting supervised research. MPhil/PhD researchers collaborate with advisors to progress through each phase of their projects, complemented by customized training programs. This degree is offered as an in-person program. The Department of Education, Practice and Society boasts a diverse faculty of research-focused academics available to guide postgraduate research across multiple disciplines: international development, educational sociology, education history, philosophy of education, tertiary education, comparative education, and vocational education.
The department houses several specialized research centers such as the Global Youth Centre, Learning and Life Chances Research Centre (LLAKES), Institute for Philosophy, Sociology of Education and Equity Centre, Education and International Development Centre (CEID), Higher Education Studies Centre (CHES), Post-14 Education and Work Centre, International Centre for Historical Research in Education (ICHRE), and the collaborative Engineering Education Centre.
