UCL's Institute of Education (IOE), the Faculty of Education and Society, provides globally renowned doctoral programs in education and social sciences. MPhil/PhD candidates conduct research initiatives, collaborating with advisors to progress through each research phase while completing customized training programs. This degree can be pursued either in-person or remotely. The Department of Education, Practice and Society boasts a diverse team of research-focused academics available to guide postgraduate studies across multiple disciplines: international development; educational sociology; education history; philosophy of education; tertiary education; comparative education; and vocational education.

Our specialized research centers include: the Global Youth Centre; Learning and Life Chances Research Centre (LLAKES); Philosophy at the Institute; Sociology of Education and Equity Centre; Education and International Development Centre (CEID); Higher Education Studies Centre (CHES); Post-14 Education and Work Centre; International Centre for Historical Research in Education (ICHRE); and the collaborative Engineering Education Centre.

Qualification Requirements

The normal minimum requirement is a Master's degree from a UK university in a subject appropriate to the programme to be followed, or a qualification of equivalent standard appropriate to the programme to be followed awarded by a university (or educational institution of university rank) outside the UK. The majority of our successful applicants hold a Merit at Master's level, and may have additional relevant experience. The English language level for this programme is: Level 4

UCL Pre-Master's and Pre-sessional English courses are for international students who are aiming to study for a postgraduate degree at UCL. The courses will develop your academic English and academic skills required to succeed at postgraduate level. International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic Version - Overall score of 7.5 and a minimum of 7.0 in each component. Test of English as Foreign Language (TOEFL) - Overall score of 109 with 27/30 in reading and writing and 23/30 in speaking and listening.
