The MA in Conservation Principles provides students with foundational knowledge about heritage conservation contexts, methodologies, and the challenges influencing conservation work. This program examines the ethical frameworks, theoretical foundations, and practical considerations involved in preserving diverse collections and historical structures. With its interdisciplinary nature, the degree emphasizes analytical reasoning and hands-on learning, utilizing UCL's collections as educational resources that serve both learners and the artifacts themselves. Our object-focused methods address real-world conservation challenges, yielding both practical solutions and theoretical insights. Participants acquire comprehensive knowledge of collection preservation techniques, preventive conservation methods, risk evaluation, conservation planning, ethical standards, professional management, while cultivating critical viewpoints on research methodologies and professional conduct.
This course targets individuals with backgrounds in heritage studies, anthropology, archaeology, cultural studies, or fine arts. Applicants should ideally demonstrate prior involvement in the heritage or museum field. While the program doesn't offer hands-on training in active conservation procedures, it serves as valuable preparation for scientists pursuing conservation research or careers in collection management and preventive conservation. Successful completion qualifies students for the two-year MSc in Conservation for Archaeology and Museums program.
