The study of health and illness in society is fundamental to contemporary life. The Health Humanities MA provides an in-depth exploration of how humanities-based approaches can shape biomedicine, clinical practices, and healthcare policy. This interdisciplinary program at UCL prepares graduates for diverse careers in medicine, scientific institutions, academic research, and beyond. Students examine health-related topics through historical and modern lenses, drawing from multiple disciplines such as anthropology, history, philosophy, sociology, science and technology studies, global health, literature, and film studies. The curriculum emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration.
This program is ideal for those seeking specialized training in health humanities as preparation for advanced research or professional advancement, as well as for professionals from other fields looking to expand their expertise. The MA is housed within UCL's Health Humanities Centre, which brings together top scholars from medicine, history, philosophy, sociology, anthropology, and cultural studies. Notably, 83% of SELCS-CMII research was rated as either 4 'world leading' or 3 'internationally excellent' in the 2021 REF assessment.
