The MA program explores the connections between artistic practice, cultural studies, and teaching methodologies, empowering students to pioneer new approaches to educational research across various settings including art institutions, schools, exhibition spaces, and alternative art education venues. Formerly titled MA Art and Design in Education, this course has produced graduates who become leading figures in the broader realm of art education. We seek applicants with robust practical and theoretical engagement in redefining art education for contemporary times. Ideal candidates are those fascinated by the crossroads of art and pedagogy, with hands-on experience in both teaching and artistic creation. Participants gain exposure to diverse perspectives spanning different stages and environments of art education. We welcome applications from educators across all levels (early childhood, primary, secondary, higher education), as well as museum professionals and independent arts educators operating in both traditional and unconventional learning spaces (community programs, cultural institutions, healthcare facilities, correctional centers, etc.). Practicing artists aiming to work or currently engaged in educational settings like galleries, schools, or universities are also encouraged to apply.

Qualification Requirements

Normally a minimum of an upper second-class Bachelor's degree from a UK university, or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard, in an art/art theory/art history specialism is required together with professional experience in formal or informal educational contexts e.g. in schools, colleges, galleries or residencies. All applicants, who meet the entry criteria, are interviewed and asked to show examples of their own artwork or curatorial practice. The English language level for this programme is: Level 2

UCL Pre-Master's and Pre-sessional English courses are for international students who are aiming to study for a postgraduate degree at UCL. The courses will develop your academic English and academic skills required to succeed at postgraduate level. International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic Version - Overall score of 7.0 and a minimum of 6.5 in each component. Test of English as Foreign Language (TOEFL) - Overall score of 96 with 24/30 in reading and writing and 22/30 in speaking and listening.
