Linguistics examines humanity's ability to communicate through language. At UCL, learners explore acoustic patterns (Phonetics and Phonology) and sentence formations (Syntax) across global languages, along with how we construct and interpret meaning (Semantics and Pragmatics). Our programs allow students to delve into diverse subjects such as language learning and cognition, bilingualism, social aspects of language, linguistic development, and interspecies communication. Both the Linguistics BA and Experimental Linguistics BSc programs share fundamental components that form the basis of linguistic studies. During the BA's initial year, all required modules establish comprehensive linguistic fundamentals while helping students identify their personal interests and aptitudes. Alongside mandatory courses in semantics, pragmatics, phonetics, phonology, and syntax, students complete a module focused on how languages are learned.
The second year involves four intermediate linguistics core courses. Students additionally select four optional modules from the department's extensive offerings, with the possibility of taking two modules from outside the linguistics department.
