Working alongside Secondary Lead School partners, the University of Chester provides a Mathematics specialization (ages 11-16 with sixth form extension) that leads to a PGCE with QTS qualification. Effective mathematics instruction equips students with interconnected mathematical knowledge, fostering profound comprehension. This program cultivates enthusiastic math educators dedicated to captivating students and sparking their enthusiasm for the subject. Our goal is to shape knowledgeable, creative, and thoughtful practitioners with a defined teaching philosophy and authentic commitment to pedagogical growth. The PGCE Secondary Mathematics program seeks to help future math teachers: Grasp foundational theories and learning principles in mathematics
Examine contemporary teaching methods in mathematics and their practical classroom applications
Participate in discussions about mathematics education challenges and instructional approaches
Learn about mathematics curriculum design and how educators can create stimulating learning experiences
Comprehend assessment techniques that support mathematics learning
Develop and implement strategies to enhance student progress and ensure all learners achieve their potential

Applicants will normally: Hold or be expected to gain a minimum of a 2:2 honours degree in a relevant subject. Have GCSE grade C/grade 4 in English Language and Mathematics. All successful candidates who receive an offer of a place for this course and choose the University of Chester as their Firm choice will be required to undergo checks with regards to their suitability to practice.  A couple of months prior to admission to this course, the University will contact you to request that you complete a self-declaration form detailing any relevant convictions or other information that you believe may have an impact upon your ability to undertake work with children or vulnerable adults.  You will also receive instructions on how to complete an online application for a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check through the University as a registered body, there will be a charge for this.
