This program equips graduates to undertake an in-depth, self-directed research project within Modern Languages and Language Area Studies. Participants will engage with current academic discussions while advancing knowledge through their work on disciplinary methodologies and practices.
Our supportive framework guides students through the creation of their research thesis. The MRes in Modern Languages consists of two main components: an intensive research methods module (40 credits) and an extensive dissertation (140 credits). The dissertation process unfolds in three phases, with close mentorship from supervisors - beginning with literature review, progressing to project design, and culminating in thesis composition.
Students select their dissertation topic in collaboration with their advisor, aligning with both personal academic interests and departmental research expertise.
Our department provides supervision across diverse Modern Languages and Area Studies subjects, with notable specializations in postcolonial studies, political analysis, and literary/cultural research focusing on European, francophone, Hispanic, German, and Chinese contexts.
