Founded in 2019, the Chester Centre for Contextual Behavioural Science specializes in studying third-wave psychological therapies such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy/Training and mindfulness-based methods. We also advance the foundational science behind these approaches through laboratory studies and non-interventional research.
Our team possesses strong methodological skills across diverse quantitative research approaches, creating reliable psychological measurement tools, and conducting systematic reviews and evidence synthesis.
The Research Centre brings together numerous faculty and students from the School of Psychology under the joint leadership of Prof Nick Hulbert-Williams and Dr Lee Hulbert-Williams. Nick oversees administrative and financial operations, including research staff management, while Lee leads postgraduate student support and provides statistical guidance for research projects. Though we emphasize collaborative research, our work currently focuses on three key areas:
Psychological Measurement (led by Dr Lee Hulbert-Williams): We develop and validate precise methods for assessing psychological concepts and behaviors, with current emphasis on measuring wellbeing, authenticity, and stigma.
Experimental Intervention Development (led by Dr Kevin Hochard): This stream tests and refines components for potential use in psychological interventions, particularly values-clarification techniques.
Applied Intervention Science (led by Prof Nick Hulbert-Williams): Through evidence reviews, observational studies, and clinical trials, we enhance wellbeing, concentrating on Suicide/Self-Harm prevention and Cancer/End-of-Life Care programs.
