The English Department, located in the architecturally significant Grade II listed Vicarage designed by John Douglas, operates within an institution established in 1839 and formally inaugurated by Gladstone in 1842. We maintain strong teaching and research traditions in 19th-century literary studies.
Our program features instruction from a committed team of expert tutors with diverse specializations spanning Romantic verse, sensational novels, Gothic literature, gender studies, material culture, scientific developments, neo-Victorian writing, children's literature, crime fiction, disability studies, travel narratives, periodical publications, regional identities, and beyond. Students will craft an original dissertation on a self-selected 19th-century topic or writer under expert supervision, cultivating their own academic focus.
