The Garden History PhD is an intensive research program culminating in a dissertation and oral defense. This advanced degree focuses on developing and presenting significant, self-directed scholarly work, typically completed within three years for full-time students or six years for part-time study. Exceptional candidates may qualify for accelerated submission if they demonstrate outstanding progress.

Thesis topics in Garden History span a diverse spectrum, including landscape architecture evolution, specific garden developments, changing perceptions of nature's interaction with urban spaces, aesthetic movements like the Sublime and Picturesque, and evaluations of prominent designers from Charles Bridgeman to contemporary figures like Geoffrey Jellicoe. Virtually any historical aspect of gardens and their creators can become a viable research focus when supported by adequate evidence.
