The Applied Computing Department, though relatively new and small in size, has consistently secured research funding from diverse UK and EU sources (including industry, research councils, and charitable organizations). It fosters a wide spectrum of research activities, with a notable increase in research student numbers in recent years. The Department has a strong track record in EU framework initiatives, having participated in two FP6-funded projects: SecurePhone and BroadWan. Our collaborative network spans numerous European institutions such as Graz Technical University, CNUCE Pisa, Thales, Thomson, TELENOR, RAL Salzburg, Telephonica Spain, Atos Origin, Saarbrücken University (Germany), INFORMA Italy, and ENST France.
Departmental research focuses primarily on image/video processing and analysis applications, wireless mobile network technologies, and biometric authentication for resource-limited devices/environments. Our image processing work predominantly employs wavelet transforms for facial recognition, real-time compression for mobile devices, visual speech analysis, biomedical image feature extraction, digital watermarking, and biometric video database indexing. In wireless networking, we concentrate on merging diverse wireless standards, mesh network technologies, network security solutions, and optimizing ad hoc network performance.
