The University of Buckingham's Country House Studies Master's program enables students to conduct advanced research across diverse aspects of country houses. Research areas span from examining specific estates and their designers to analyzing their societal functions and cultural representations in media.
While each research project maintains a specialized focus, the program emphasizes exploring the interconnected nature of country houses rather than purely architectural perspectives. Past student works have investigated Baroque wall paintings in estate decor, musical practices during the 1650s, and the evolution of country property sales between the 18th-19th centuries. Students ultimately select their own research focus.
Degree completion depends entirely on the dissertation (no examinations), making the student-supervisor partnership central to the program. The Humanities School suggests a maximum dissertation length of 25,000 words (roughly 75 pages at 1.5 line spacing), not counting citations. Regular one-on-one meetings guide the dissertation's progress throughout the academic year.
