The BA in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics brings together these three crucial disciplines. Unlike similar programs at other institutions, this degree emphasizes an interdisciplinary approach, particularly examining how human behavior influences economic and political systems.
Within the Philosophy component, students begin with an Introduction to Philosophy course and explore topics like Philosophy of Mind. Specialized political theory modules, such as Introduction to Political Theory and Freedom, are also included. The curriculum covers Scientific Method and Philosophy of Social Science, along with an interdisciplinary course on Genetics and Society.
The Politics portion centers on regional and national studies, highlighting political stability and security issues. These challenges—ranging from conflict and terrorism to migration and economic crises—are examined through multiple lenses. For instance, Latin American studies incorporate historical, cultural, and economic factors shaping the region's politics. The department hosts the Centre for United Studies and the International Institute for the Study of Cuba.
Economics in the PPE program includes foundational Microeconomics and Macroeconomics, with optional modules like History of Economic Thought, Welfare Economics, Energy Economics, and Behavioral Economics. A key focus is the intersection of Economics and Politics.
