The School of Modern Languages excels in translation studies research, with key focus areas encompassing: audiovisual translation, translation technologies (particularly machine translation), media accessibility, historical translation studies, literary translation (covering poetry, drama, fiction, and practice-based research), adaptation studies, and institutional/societal perspectives on translation. Research spans multiple languages including Catalan, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish.
Our translation research initiatives are enhanced through partnerships with leading organizations such as the Institute of Translation and Interpreting (ITI), the Chartered Institute of Linguists, and the Association of Programmes in Translation and Interpreting Studies (APTIS). The University's Penguin Archive and Theatre Collection provide valuable resources for studying translation in publishing and performance. Additionally, the School is equipped with specialized tools including a Tobii eye tracker and iMotions software for advanced research in screen studies and translation processes.
We invite prospective students to explore customized master's or doctoral research opportunities in these fields. Our postgraduate community thrives within a supportive academic environment that fosters professional growth. Students are encouraged to present their work at departmental seminars, university-wide events, and international conferences, with funding available for research travel and conference participation. We provide comprehensive training in academic skills, including teaching methodologies.
The School's research infrastructure promotes cross-disciplinary engagement through seminars and specialized facilities like the Multimedia Centre. This dedicated language facility features a language lab, media production suite, extensive foreign film and periodical collections, and a compact screening room accommodating 18 viewers.
