The Theatre Department provides expert supervision across diverse fields, encompassing early modern theater and performance techniques, theater history and practices from the 19th to 21st centuries, modern British theater, performance adaptation and translation, current performance methodologies, performance archives, dance history and techniques, bodily aspects in performance, philosophical approaches to performance, virtual/augmented reality applications, immersive theater experiences, and audience research.
Our department excels in both historical scholarship and practice-led research. Students can pursue practice-oriented projects or archival research utilizing our Theatre Collection resources - an accredited museum and archive service that ranks as the UK's second-largest theater archive. This collection specializes in South West regional theater, 19th-century performance, post-WWII theater, live/performance art, scenic and costume design, and theater-related visual arts.
For interdisciplinary research proposals, we coordinate cross-departmental supervisory teams to provide comprehensive project support.
