Linguistics explores human language, examining its cognitive processes and societal roles. By studying linguistics, you gain deeper insights into language, offering valuable perspectives on individuals and communities. This profound understanding of human nature becomes increasingly crucial in addressing today's diverse social and environmental challenges.
The University of Bristol emphasizes sociolinguistics research, investigating language's societal dimensions. Our work explores how linguistic studies illuminate contemporary and historical social issues, employing varied methodologies like qualitative and quantitative analysis of recordings, surveys, textual collections, and archival materials. We investigate linguistic variation and evolution using both current and historical evidence, while also critically examining the attitudes, ideologies, and policies shaping everyday language use. As a PhD candidate, you'll apply these approaches to your research while collaborating with our team.
Our faculty has produced significant scholarship on global language contexts, with expertise spanning multiple languages: Catalan, English, Esperanto, French, German, Irish, Occitan, Portuguese, Scots, Spanish, and Welsh. We enthusiastically support research involving additional languages.
Housed in the School of Modern Languages, our linguistics team maintains extensive national and international collaborations. We partner with professional organizations such as the Association for French Language Studies, the International Association for the Study of Spanish in Society, the Forum for Germanic Language Studies, and the Historical Sociolinguistics Network. We collaborate with university departments like Anthropology and English, while contributing to Faculty of Arts research centers. These connections, combined with our research events and supportive team, create an outstanding academic environment.
