Scientists at the School of Biological Sciences pursue innovative research spanning diverse biological fields, such as genomics, biotechnology, cellular biology, molecular plant studies, sensory systems, animal behavior and evolutionary processes, population dynamics, pathogen-host relationships, and ecological services.
The school operates from a cutting-edge £54 million Life Sciences facility. Our world-class laboratories feature essential '-omics' technologies and substantial bioinformatics computing resources. The building's design enhances our collaborative culture, housing an evolutionary biology research hub that brings together experts from earth sciences, biochemistry, public health, chemistry, and computer science. We maintain robust partnerships with regional organizations like BBC Bristol, Bristol Zoo, and the University of Bristol Botanic Garden.
We provide PhD and research-based MSc programs covering various biological disciplines, along with specialized taught MSc degrees in Bioinformatics and Science Communication for Environmental Solutions. Our vibrant postgraduate community comprises about 175 students who benefit from an inspiring academic atmosphere, comprehensive graduate training, and career development support.
Postgraduate researchers contribute significantly to our scientific output while gaining expertise in science communication, public engagement, statistical analysis, academic writing, and professional development.
