The University of Bristol emphasizes sociolinguistics research, investigating language's societal dimensions. We explore how linguistic studies illuminate contemporary and historical social matters, employing varied methodologies like qualitative and quantitative analysis of recordings, surveys, text collections, and archival materials. Our work tracks linguistic evolution through modern and historical evidence, while also critically examining the ideologies and policies shaping everyday language use. As a doctoral candidate, you'll apply these approaches to your research while collaborating with our team.
Our researchers have published widely on global language phenomena, with expertise spanning multiple languages: Catalan, English, Esperanto, French, German, Irish, Occitan, Portuguese, Scots, Spanish, and Welsh. We enthusiastically support students working with additional languages.
Housed in the School of Modern Languages, our linguistics faculty maintains national and international partnerships.
