The French Department is dedicated to pioneering research and outstanding achievements across diverse areas of French studies. Our faculty possesses broad expertise spanning medieval and early modern eras, visual-textual connections, literature from the 19th to 21st centuries, film and theater (including adaptations), cultural history, political studies, and comparative literature. We maintain strong collaborative ties with other departments, particularly in visual/literary cultures, conflict studies, medieval research, English, and comparative literature.
Every graduate researcher works closely with a primary advisor specializing in their chosen field, supplemented by a secondary supervisor who may come from another department when projects require interdisciplinary approaches.
As a regional hub for War and Culture Studies, our department members actively participate in numerous Faculty of Arts research centers. Several faculty serve as editors for prominent academic journals and hold leadership roles in professional associations.
Graduate students may participate in an exchange program with Paris's École Normale Supérieure (rue d'Ulm) or secure teaching positions at Université de Bordeaux III.
Our research students spearhead a seminar series exploring literary and visual environments, along with a project dedicated to publishing graduate creative works.
