The Department of English's research embodies our field's fundamental principles—textual analysis, critical theory, and historical context—while engaging with the evolving landscape of literary studies. Our work spans all eras, from medieval times to the present, with faculty frequently pursuing interdisciplinary projects.
We take particular pride in our strengths in medieval and Renaissance literature, Romantic and Victorian periods, modernist works, and contemporary English-language writing. Distinguished for its comprehensive study of poetry across centuries, our department also specializes in diverse areas including literary criticism, bibliography, intersections between literature and science/medicine/environment, digital approaches to humanities, feminist and gender studies, LGBTQ+ literature, postcolonial texts, Black British authors, global English literature, 20th-century American works, and Welsh literary traditions.
These research initiatives support doctoral studies both independently and through partnerships with other Bristol departments and external institutions, spanning disciplines like visual arts, health sciences, philosophy, historical studies, political science, theater, classical studies, religious studies, and foreign languages.
