The Research in Comparative Literatures and Cultures program is housed in the School of Modern Languages, leveraging two key strengths: transnational studies and intermedial research. Through novel subjects and cutting-edge approaches, we've established cross-disciplinary links across arts and social sciences, addressing pressing global issues from psychological well-being to environmental crises.

Transnational scholarship highlights both cultural distinctions and shared influences. Our work examines cultural exchange, migration patterns, and knowledge transfer within and outside Europe, spanning colonial histories and contemporary contexts. We challenge traditional geographical binaries like 'West/East' or 'North/South' while analyzing vertical and horizontal connections.

Intermedial investigations expand on our expertise in visual-textual studies, performing arts, sound culture, and analysis of diverse media including digital games, sequential art, Japanese comics, mass media, environmental design, and artistic expressions from video art to street murals. We also investigate how literary forms (poetry, fiction, personal narratives, political discourse) intersect with societal, governmental, and professional spheres.

The Comparative Literatures and Cultures program utilizes faculty members' specialized knowledge. Every doctoral candidate receives guidance from a primary advisor in their research field, supplemented by a secondary advisor often from another discipline, tailored to the project's requirements. Advisory groups may incorporate experts from across the university, including departments like Classics, English, Theater Arts, Historical Studies, or Philosophical Inquiry.

Graduate students become integral members of our nurturing academic community. We actively promote participation in departmental seminars, university-wide research forums, and international conferences, with financial support available for fieldwork and external engagements.
