Industry has a pressing need for engineers with expertise bridging both mechanical and electrical fields. This program equips you with core knowledge and skills to meet this demand in a distinctive manner.
The curriculum includes an optional third-year industry placement where you'll apply concepts learned during the initial two years of study. While direct enrollment isn't available, high-achieving students can transfer from BEng or MEng Mechanical and Electrical Engineering programs after their second year, subject to academic performance and successful industry interviews.
The program combines mechanical and electrical engineering topics across key areas: electro-mechanical system design and integration, energy conversion systems, embedded control systems, power electronics, and energy management.
The first two years establish foundational knowledge in mathematics, thermal systems, dynamics, computing, electrical power technologies, and electronics. Interdisciplinary learning is reinforced through lab work and case studies.
Your third year will be dedicated to an industrial placement
Fourth-year studies include advanced coursework plus a major individual research project synthesizing concepts from throughout the program.
In the fifth year, you'll select specialized electives and participate in a comprehensive group design project. Your unit choices and project focus allow specialization in areas ranging from robotic actuation systems and smart power grids to sustainable propulsion technologies.
Graduates will be prepared to drive innovation across multiple sectors, potentially working on:
renewable energy microgrids, optimizing power flow from generation to end-users,
healthcare and industrial robotics, integrating mechanical and electrical components for advanced functionality,
next-generation electric vehicle powertrains, encompassing energy storage, motors, and drivetrain systems,
self-powered sensor networks that harvest ambient energy for operation in remote locations
