This distinctive interdisciplinary MA program enables you to explore Black Humanities by critically examining the worldwide histories, philosophies, languages, literature, and artistic expressions of African diaspora communities.
Drawing upon innovative humanities research, you'll analyze the historical foundations and intellectual structures that shape modern discussions about race. Through scholarly readings and seminar conversations, you'll tackle pressing issues regarding knowledge boundaries, systemic racism's enduring impacts, and movements for societal equity. These themes will be explored within historical and present-day settings across Africa, the Caribbean, the Americas, and Europe. Throughout the program, you'll gain insights into Black British experiences, particularly in Bristol—a city profoundly connected to the transatlantic slave trade and its ongoing consequences.
The University of Bristol houses the Centre for Black Humanities, a global research nexus for Black cultural studies that directly influences our curriculum. Our faculty conducts groundbreaking research on diverse subjects including British hip-hop culture, contemporary Black British art, slavery's historical narratives, African literary movements, and Lusophone Atlantic studies. We emphasize participation in a global, multilingual academic community, demonstrated through the Center's yearly schedule of guest lectures and seminars that connect you with eminent international scholars and Bristol's vibrant cultural landscape.
